Compatibility of Lenses with my old camera

I have a Nikon F4 camera with AF lenses. Now when I'm looking for a new ultra telephoto lens there are lots of different types of lenses that are not listed for my camera such as AF-S, AF-D IF VR etc.

Will any of these lenses work in the auto focus, aperture priority and shutter priority modes with the F4 camera.

Nikon has deemed to not reply to my question and I'm getting different answers from different people.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

On the F4:
AF-S (silent wave AF motor in the lens) will work.
AF-D (lens communicates focus distance to camera for flash metering) will work fine, but the F4 can't use that info.
IF = internal focus. This feature is not restricted to any bodies.
VR = Vibration Reduction. The lens can be used on the F4, but this particular feature will not work.
G = an AF-D lens without an aperture ring. Aperture can be set manually only with controls on the camera, which the F4 lacks. On the F4 a G lens can only be used in P and S modes.

Nikonians.org is a great resource. If you're a Nikon owner you should definitely spend some time over there.

The F4 is one of the more compatible Nikon film bodies, in that it will operate with virtually all MF and AF lenses from 1959 to present, with some restrictive functioning as noted. Some people feel it's actually a better MF camera than AF. If you find you need VR or ultrafast AF speed, you can always pick up a used N80 or F100 fairly cheap these days.
