Camera Lenses

I have a Nikon N65. I would like to purchase a new lense for my camera that will do better close ups from far away. My camera has the standard 28-80mm lense. Could someone tell me the difference between lenses and/or recommend a lense? I am just getting interested in photography for a hobby and I am a little ignorant about what to use. Thanks for any help.

For "close ups from far away" one needs a telephoto zoom or lens. Typical and very economical are the 70-300 f/4-5.6 zooms. Nikon's 70-300 f/4-5.6D ED is good, as are Sigma's 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO or Tamron's 70-300 f/4-5.6 LD.

Wider aperture is better, but f/2.8 zooms, 300 f/4, or 300 f/2.8 lenses become very heavy and expensive.
