Contracs for Taking Photos - Help!

I was wondering if someone might be able to answer the following questions for me or direct me to someone who can. I am a beginning photographer and was recently asked by a music promoter to take some photos at a show he puts on once a month. I said I would and charge him the expenses in doing this. At the show he made an announcement that the photos I took would be on sale at next months show. I had no idea that he was going to do this. I have no idea if the people who performed signed any kind of contract with him giving up their rights to the copyright on the photos taken at the concert. I don't want to turn over the negatives and have him sell the photos in case he hasn't got signed permission from the performers. And if I am going to go to the work of selling these photos I want to make some money. Can anyone give me some advice before I go to talk to him about this. We did not have any kind of written agreement. In Canada, the person in the photo owns othe copyright unless there is a signed model release.
