Home Xmas Portrait Question (again)

Ok, here's my idea -- please tell me if good or bad

First off I'm not sure if I'm gonna use my Chinon or my Kodak Easyshare (5MP) I'm not sure I'll have my Nikon in time

I'm gonna have a red backdrop w/ a white fluffy ground.. Put my son in a suit and have "presents" around him w/ a santa hat (or reindeer ears)

MAYBE on the Red backdrop have a wreath..

james will be sitting on the ground or on a small stool

The only part that might worry me is the 'red' santa hat and the 'red' background clashing. What about an emerald green backdrop? or what about outside in frount of an evergreen tree? I don't know red might work but reds could definately clash if you are not careful. :)

What kind of look are you going for? You have what seems to be a fun backdrop with presents and bright colors, but then you have your son in a suit? If you want a formal dramatic look, I would go with a darker background, the evergreen or even black. Put some bright colored presents around him, in maybe a little rocking chair with a wreach propped up. If you want a more fun look, I would dress him down a little, and then maybe go with a white backdrop and white fur. You can then use the presents, maybe a tree, and the santa hat would look VERY cute! I think the red background may be a bit overpowering. Good luck! Hope you post your final decision, and photos!

I think I would stay away from the red backdrop if you will have him in a santa suit. .. What kind of lighting do you have? If you have enough white would be good. I would also keep it simple. .. the more props you add the more you take away from your subject. .. the santa suit and maybe a present or two I think will be plenty .. .Reds are very hard to match as mentioned above and if the flash or lighting hits it "just right(or wrong)" then you will get orangy spots on it. .. You could make this both formal and fun by changing your composition minimally ... getting close up to your son you will make them more formal . . .for the fun ones have him with the package, reindeer ears or whatever. . . I just did a 2yo girl and she wasn't into being photographed ...and the kids do get burned out quickly on a session but I would just take whatever you can get using the different props, etc and then you can always delete or just not print the ones you didn't like!

Liz,
I personally agree-I would stay away from the red back drop- for several reasons-
* the red on red will be way to much.
* yes he's two-you can use more ideas, and change things faster with a white backdrop.
* also, this is about James and the holiday-how about letting James and the gifts, ect. be the subject of your eyes attention ,instead of the overpowering color?
how ever the ideas are very good and I am sure you will get some VERY good poses out of it.
also, for something maybe not all together saying holiday(because when taking these ,you should do a few that your family will keep up all year round)
how about: White backdrop: james in his diddy, mixing bowl with floor in it and on james-chefs hat-wisk- and maybe some stuffed gingerbread dolls- as if he's the chef and making them himself.
Walmart usually has this pattern already printed on material-you cut it out and hot glue or sew and stuff.
Wishing you the very best this holiday season,
Debby
