Black & White Photography: A Basic Manual Third Edition, Revised By Henry Horenstein. This tells a lot about developing black and white film.

You're probably going to have to buy a few things like chemistry. Probably 5 different chemicals at least, a developing tank and reels (if it doesn't already come with one or some), some way to measure out quantities of chemicals, some way to store them, some way and place to hang the negatives once they're done being developed that doesn't have much dust, and some plastic sleeves to hold the negatives. I may be missing some things though. Search through better photo in the top right corner of the page here for black and white film processing or something like that. If you're thinking about doing color processing, that's not as easy, and I doubt very many if anybody can develop slides at home. I've done black and white film developing in my bathroom in my small apartment, I just had to find a way to make it TOTALLY light proof.
