flashes

I am not a professional and I just bought my first slr camera. It is a really good used one. It is a minolta SRT200. I don't know what kind of flash I need to go with this camera. it did not come with one. I bought it off of ebay.

Download the manual from the Konica-Minolta website.

That camera has no TTL flash metering or auto setting of the shutter or aperture with flash, so modern TTL flashes cannot be used. Use a simple non-dedicated flash, like Vivitar 283 or Sunpak 383 Super. These do automate exposure somewhat. You manually set the shutter speed to the flash sync (1/60) or longer and the aperture to match the flash's program. A sensor on the flash then controls the light output for proper exposure.

By today's standards, your camera is a very basic one with no automation. Everything has to be set manually, from the shutter speed, ISO to the aperature. As Jon said, you will need to use a non-dedicated flash which will provide some automation for the flash exposure. This camera won't do the thinking for you. You will have to learn to do everything yourself. In other words, you have a GREAT camera. (When I started in photography, even the flash was not automated. You had to calculate that!) Your camera will still be taking good pictures when a lot of the more modern cameras bought today will be at the bottom of a landfill. It was built to last. Also, by having to set everything yourself, you will learn a lot more about photography and what makes the camera work.
