How Much to Charge for a Photos Rights

Hi All,
Im on the verge of selling my first photo. Its a panoramic of a museum in spain. Ive been told that the amount of money I chage for the the rights varies depending on what the museum would like to use it for, ie. advertisements, posters, cover of publication vs. interior of publication, length of time they want the rights for it, etc.

Can anyone give examples of what some of these would cost. Maybe some specific examples of what some of you may have done in the past or doing presently. I dont want to overcharge but at the same time dont want to make whats fair market value. Is there a website I could find out fair market values? anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

joe

You're on the right track. In fact, you need to answer the questions outlined in your first paragraph here, and then tell us the difference between not wanting to overcharge and not wanting to make fair market value as you indicated in the second paragraph. To me, that's the equivalent of undercharging and with that, sorry but I can't help you but there are a lot of others here who are essentially experts on that subject. .
Take it light ;>)

sorry, I meant I want to make fair market value. I appreciate your response mark. Do you have an example pricelist you could suggest? Its a blended panoramic of an interior. It consists of approximate layers and took about 60 hours to perfect. any suggestions or approximations based on maybe something youve sold would be a huge help. even tho you say many here are experts at it I havent received any other feedback. thx.

As I said Joe, you need to get those questions that you asked earlier, answered by your client. In the meantime, assuming you're in the U.S., you need to get that work copyrighted. www.copyright.gov. Make sure you get it registered there using form VA.

To get some ballpark figures of what EACH separate usage is approximately worth, look at the 1999 pricing survey from APA. (Advertising Photographers of America) http://www.apanational.com/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3290

As I said, it's ballpark only. The fact that it required a week and a half of hours to complete this is also worth something. That's a LOT of work and should be an additional selling point. Get a forms book from some group like ASMP.org and use a stock delivery memo to cover EACH type of use they want and the prices for each. You really need to negotiate the usage, (this is what pros do on a regular basis) and remember the work has value to them and that's why they want to use it. EACH use, Joe. Then put together a package deal.

Also, you're going to need to know the approximate quantity of each use, whether it's publication, transit use, TV, etc., AND the size of the finished work they'll use. And in the meantime, I wouldn't give them any images on CD, make sure any sample images you give them have SAMPLE written on the face with copyright info on the back.
