Photography Question

JENNIFER L. ROBINSON

Where to START?

I would like to start my own "contracting" business for photography. Doing Senior portraits, family portraits, sports, etc.. I live in the State of Oklahoma & was told I did not need a business license. I read somewhere about a City license. What is that?

I'm also trying to brainstorm for a really great name .. i'd rather not use my name. Any suggestions? I'm a mother of 4 children and I always tell the family members that I'm making "memories" by snapping the million shots I take at every family gathering :)

I've read alot about portfolios. Any suggestions on building a professional portfolio?

Last but least I have also been researching editing software. I have the Adobe Photoshop Elements but I'm not a big fan of it. I'd rather use Picasa. I've heard about Microsoft Digital Image Pro.... What software is good for great editing?

OK if anyone else has any other suggestions please feel free to fill my brain with the info!!! Thank you!!!!

You are asking for a brian dump of information from people. Maybe try and ask a more targeted question.

I'll answer you by speaking about something that you didn't even ask. You say you want to do Seniors, Family portraits, and sports. Those are 3 very different things, with 3 completely different marketing strategies.

Unless you have a fantastic business plan to roll out to those 3 very different markets, I would pull back, and decide which one you want to do first.

Reading this, you might not agree with me. But, in a few years, you'll think back and say, 'that dude was right'.

I would pick one of those things, and work the hell out of it. Once you've got it down and have it mastered, you can then think about writing a business plan for the another thing to add to the mix, if you want the additional.

Most photographers wind up doing one thing really well, and they get additional business without advertising for those thigns.

As an example, I do weddings. Almost all of my portrait sessions are from past wedding clients when they have babies, or they want family portraits. But, I do not ever advertise portraits. I also get corporate work from wedding clients, although I do not advertise at all for corporate work.

Specialize, and let the other stuff fall out where it may.

But, you are targeting too much on your first run.
