Photography Question

Jessica Jenney

Using a photo for a book cover

I've been asked if I would sell a photo of mine for the cover of someone's poetry book. Does anybody have any experience with this? What to charge, how to sell one's photo for this purpose? How to deliver the image; to the publisher or to the writer etc? What questions should I ask of this person?

  Jessica,

Get everything in writing! You'll need to figure out the number of uses/copies going to be printed. Everything should be spelled out in a contract including but not limited to the number of uses, who retains the copyright for the image, what should happen in the event they need to use the image more than the original contract states, etc. You can deliver it via CD/DVD, email it directly to them, etc. after you have a contract written. As for charges try the following link:

http://www.photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm

It gives you an average dollar figure that other photogs have charge for similar type projects. It is intend to be used as a guide in that in different markets, you may be able to charge a little more or a little less.

Others here may have more to add.
