Me and a friend have started a photography company a few months ago and we believe we're ready to start to sell our work. We're both nervous and confused on getting pieces sold. Without over or under priceing our art. Please help! I have uploaded a sample of our stuff...tell us if we have waht it takes. Thank you.

Constructive criticism: The cockeyed angle works for the picture of the truck, but in the 3rd pic of the fence posts and beach you should rotate it to level the horizon. IMHO.

Jon, I agree. Also seems that the photos are a tad out of focus. In the truck grill pic there is too much asphalt showing in the pic which, no matter how hard I try, my eye is drawn away from the grill and onto the asphalt. Having said that, do you guys have insurance, a business plan, business license, etc. etc.? Do you have a property release for the shot of the truck grill? The list goes on! If not, then you probably don't have what it takes........yet, on the business side anyway!

Thanks for the comments guys. We do have our license and business plan. Why do we need insurance? As you can see, we're very green to the photo business. Todd-Do you have much experience in this business?

Every business needs insurance. Not just photographers. You need liability insurance to protect you in the event of an accident i.e. someone trips over your tripod and breaks a leg or worse. You need insurance on your equipment in the event of an accident i.e. someone trips over your tripod and breaks a $4,000 camera or a $1,000 lens or worse. You may even be required to have workmans comp in the event you, your partner, or an employee gets hurt on the job. No, I do not have as much experience with the photog business as others here do; but, sound business principles and practices apply here as they do in any business. You're not going to learn how to run any kind of successful business, even a photog business, by asking a few questions on a forum. I don't mean to sound harsh by all that I've said and I'm certainly not here to discourage you in your endeavor. You just don't want the wings to fall off before you get this thing off the ground. At the very very least, you need to find some books on business management and read, read, read. I even think there is one out there on how to run a successful photography business. Good luck.

If your sales are poor, keep reinventing yourselves until you find something that will be a hit. To help pay the bills, look into doing portraits, freelance and so forth... Look into getting a decent website made to showcase your work. Do you know of anyone who can do it for you for peanuts? Buddies or so forth?

Damon, Being a successful photographer has a lot less to do with your photographic skills as it does with your business skills. A good business person but poor photographer will make a lot more money then a good photographer but poor business person. There are tons of good resources out there for starting a small business.
