Not given credit for a photo that was published Hello. I was recently paid by Parade Magazine for rights to publish one of my photos. This was my first published photo and I was very excited. My best friend told everyone we know to watch for it in the May 27 Parade magazine. Well ... the photo was published but I was not given credit. It was one of 2 photos used to introduce a new photo contest called "Celebrate America's Beauty". Can they legally publish the photo without giving credit to the photographer? Thanks in advance for any responses. Nevia

Nevia, "Can they legally publish the photo without giving credit to the photographer?" Yes! I would suggest reading the contract you signed. I doubt there is anything in the contract that states they have to mention your name when publishing the photo.

Todd's absolutely right Nevia. Read the contract you signed. While you're at it, btw, you might also review it in terms of rights of usage or transfering your rights to the publisher in this instanace. In terms of credit, however, they may consider this advertising, even if for something directly concerned with the magazine and that normally doesn't get photo credit. One reason is because the fees are higher for photographers paid for advertising work over editorial usage. So they figure the photographer is sufficiently compensated without credit. One thing you could try is sending a letter to the editor or person you entered your agreement with, ask them to provide you with remedial photo credit in the next issue or two down the road. That may help asuage your feelings which are likely justified.
