Starting out I have been taking pictures forever, and there has been a recent pick up in interest in my photography. Before I have always taken the pictures, charged a flat session fee, and given the "client" their photographs on a CD. I am also a teacher and in school getting my masters. So, doing it the way I mentioned before has been the easiest. However, I am very confused at what I should be charging. Most photographers make their money from selling the prints. With me not selling my prints...I have no idea what I should be charging. I also need to work on seeing my works as professional level. Anyway, any suggestions would be wonderful! :) Thanks and God Bless

Hi Christina! There are a lot of factors that determine what you charge... I've had my side business for about 3 years, and I actually don't make much from selling prints. I price my sessions to be paid for my time and cover the cost of a few some prints that are included. If they order anything further, it's just icing on the cake! It depends on your area and what your market can handle, but in my area I've talked to several other newbies and the going rate is about $50-60/hour for our time. Hope that helps!

Christina, D. and I belong to another forum, where there are photogs that do this same thing, where prints aren't the main focus. Some of them are charging anywhere from $200 and on up per CD of about 50-60, and charging more for more images. They also give the customer a release, so they can have the images printed where ever they want.

What program do you use to make CDs for your clients? I have Photoshop and PowerPoint, but I want to make sure I save the photos in a format that most people can read. I'd like them to be able to enlarge them easily and have a slide show option. Any help would be appreciated.

Personally I just burn the images on CD as JPEG files. I also have ProShow Gold to do slide shows, but I only do that for special occasions.
