Photography Question

Greg D. Scharton

How much should I charge for portraits?

I'm getting my feet wet in the photography world. I've been asked to take pictures of a few local bar bands, my brother's business, and a family. I have no clue how much to charge them for prints and CD's, plus the right to use them(brother's business. I have a decent DSLR and a creative mind but I do not own a current external flash or kit. How much should I charge?

What to charge is one of the most difficult questions to answer. You need to look at the current rates charged in your area and adjust from there. One fact is that you should charge substantially more for a CD than prints. If you give them a CD, They have no need to purchase prints from you, they can also use the images in advertising and on-line. I will be shooting a senior portrait and quoted a price which include prints and a discount on additional prints if they want them. A CD will not be available. If they ask, I might provide a Low Res-Web Sized copy so they can email to family, The family will not be able to get a good print from it.
If you severely under charge, you will have a difficult time charging more late.

Ok! Now, if I do print, should I go to my local Cord Camera or photography printing place to get prints? Also, what about proofs? How would I make those?

I print proofs at home (with the word Proof across it) Another option is to show them the images on a PC and don't print proofs. I use Mpix for my printing of the photos. An 8x10 is $1.99 and a 5x7 is only .70, You can have them mounted on matboard for about $2.50, I use that for my landscape shots that I have printed.
Just be sure to have your monitor calibrated. They will send out a calibration kit to you at no charge, It consists of a print and a CD with the print. I used it once but now have a Spyder, either way the screen and my prints match. Their shipping is $4.85 so it pays to order more than just 1 print since this is their flat rate.
Check out their web site Mpix.com
