Photography Question

Stephen A. Liverman

What price do I ask for my photo?

I'm an amateur digital photographer, doing mostly landscape work and have started receiving requests for copies of my work for brochures, web pages, as well as prints. What is a reasonable price for an image file to be used in a brochure? I'm not looking to make big bucks here but I have no idea what price to ask?

You mean a commercial brochure? What kind of license are they asking? (Full rights, rights to use only in a limited number of brochures, etc.?)

Stephen, I have access information to answer your question. But I'll need to know how it will be used as Ariel mentioned. Let me know and I'll try to get you a range of prices.

Thanks for the responses. I have yet to hear back from the individual requesting the photo. Just to give me an idea, what should I ask for someone wishing to use the image for a non-professional purpose, like a school brochure or project as opposed to one for professional purposes. I'm sorry I don't know more, but I've never attempted to sell images before.

Stephen, I couldn't begin to price work for a for-profit venture; others here could help more. However, for not-for-profit, such as a school or church, I have given limited right to use one of my images with no charge. If it were me, I would be happy with simply getting photo credits in the brochure, etc. I have specified the limits of how an image can be used in writing, so that there is no room for misunderstanding.

Stephen, John probably has a pretty good idea considering where you are. Howoever, I checked with FotoQuote and found some prices that may or may not be right for you. Based on a broochure under the heading "Advertising," and using the lowest press run category of 1,000 copies, here are some ranges:

1/4 page pic $225 to 450 (300 midrange)
1/2 page pic $281 to 562 (375 midrange)
3/4 page pic $299 to 598 (399 midrange)
full page $337 to 675 (450 midrange)

The next step up in the press run figure increases each of the above by roughly 16 to 16.5%. So it rea!lly does depend. It also depends on what the actual usage is -- brochure is pretty general. But maybe this will help some.

Good luck!
