  Laura,

My opinion, THE best would be Canon. If nothing else, their interchangable lenses are a good reason. I got my Digital Rebel EOS 300D over a year ago for $1000 - and I got it online so I didn't pay any sales tax. It came with a kit; an 18-55mm lens, Canon Image Browser (with PS Elements 2.0) I think I bought it through Amazon.com. If your new to SLRs you could use the xtra money to get accesories like...cf card, camera bag, tripod, photoshop, etc. and don't forget, you should have a decent pc. If you've already got all the accesories and pc - go with the Canon 20d (for about $1500 - don't know if that includes a lens though.

Regards,
Robert

  Laura,

First Question is do you already own any lenses? If not Nikon d70 is a great choice. If you do, then grad the best camera from the manufacturer of the lenses you own. I'm bias to Nikon myself, but I would settle for a Canon Digital Rebel if I owned Canon lenses. If you're looking to get more bang for you buck Visit KEH.com they sell good quality used cameras and lenses. I would stick to a Nikon or a Canon based system. if you can try to stay with OEM lenses (Nikon Body = Nikon Lenses ETC.) Good used Nikon bodies include the d100, or the d1x (only with latest Firmware). I've purchased several used lenses in excellent condition with blemish free glass through KEH.com as well B & H Photo (bhphoto.com) B&H is slightly higher in price, but they truly stand behind what they sell!

PS I suggest using a Mac for you digital editing. Visit smalldog.com or macofalltrades.com. A used mac is better then any PC. And you must own Photoshop cs, I bought the whole CS Suite from Amazon.com, but shop around, given the day you might find it cheaper from another vendor.
