What is a Teleconverter do?

I am new to the photography game and I am not sure of what some of the terms are. What is a teleconverter and how is it different from an extension tube?

Thanks
Rob

A teleconverter has optical elements (glass lenses) that increase the focal length of the lens. The focusing range of the lens is unchanged.

An extension tube is a hollow tube with no optical elements. It moves the lens farther from the film, and changes its focusing range. With an extension tube attached the lens will focus closer, for increased magnification, but then cannot focus at longer distances to infinity.
