Flash for Minolta XGM A friend of mine is looking for a flash for her old camera. What flashes do you recommend? I know nothing about the older Minoltas so I was hoping someone could help me out. Thanks!

Promaster makes flashes dedicated to older Minoltas. (Promaster.com)

The XG-M does not support TTL (through the lens) flash control. A TTL-only flash cannot be used, it has to be one that has it's own light sensor for controlling flash output. The Promaster 5000 series flashes are available with a Minolta module (FTM-2631) for Minolta's manual focus SLRs, like the XG-M. An advantage of this approach is that you can simply buy different modules to use the same flash on different cameras. The modules are much less expensive (~$40-80) than buying new dedicated flashes (~$150-300). Note - only the DX models in Promaster's 5000-series can use modules for digital SLRs. Otherwise, a non-dedicated auto flash, such as the Sunpak 383 Super (~$80), will work fine with the Minolta XG-M and virtually any other camera. For the XG-M, the only significant difference between a "dedicated" and non-dedicated flash is that the dedicated unit will automatically set the shutter speed to 1/60 when the shutter dial is set to "A", and activate a blinking flash-ready light in the camera's viewfinder.

A Minolta PX 280 or PX 360 flash can be had for less that $75 at KEH.com or on eBay.

The only dedication for the Minolta XG-M is the shutter speed contact. I don't suggest using a 280PX or 380PX since these both incorporate a TTL contact which will come in contact with the metal hotshoe. As Kerry suggested, Promaster makes quality flashes that have a dedication module designed for the older XG series cameras. I own the Promaster 5750DX with the X700 module. I find this unit to be extremely durable and versatile. I purchased it for $120.00 plus $70.00 for the digital module for my Maxxum 5D. The module for the X700 was included in the flash price. These flashes also have an off camera cable available that attaches between the module and flash. Have fun and keep shooting,
