equipment I have a Canon EOS Rebel G and I would like to purchase a wide angle or zoom lens. What would be the best option and cost effective for multi-purpose uses such as weddings and recitals.

A good wide angle zoom lens would be the 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. A good telephoto zoom lens would be the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. I wouldn't neccessarily go for wide angle for weddings. I would go for more of a telephoto lens. A good wide angle would probably be the 24mm f/1.4L. Shooting low light like weddings and recitals, you need a very fast lens. I personally am really wanting to save up for the 135mm f/2.0L. Very fast, very sharp and an awesome portrait length. Good luck.

Hmm, I got a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 for around $400 at bhphotovideo.com. I really like it so far. It's good for moderately low light. The price is pretty good as well. The 28-135 would probably be a pretty good option if your subjects are decently still. I'd also like to replace the part in Justin's post "A good telephoto zoom lens would be the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS." with "an awesome but stinking expensive telephoto zoom lens..." I did end up spending a little more through a loan and getting a 200mm f/2.8 telephoto lens for around $600 and even though it's a fixed length, it's been great. Try to find some reviews for the 28-135 though. I've heard that's a pretty good lens.
