  Brad,

I have recently taken up photography with an all manual camera. I have found the best books are second hand, from the late seventies/early eighties.

As most fancy automatic stuff wasn't available for cameras the information is straightforward and to the point. They will explain exposure, depth of field etc.

Plus they are also cheap! $3-10 US!

Hope this helps.

I'm a beginner and I just got Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson and it is a great book.

John Hedgecoe's "Complete Photography Course" covers all of the basics and some advance techniques in layman's terms.
Also,...the "Kodak Library of Creative Photography" series, is worth-while reading.
Both should be available at a local library.
