Countdown to July Contest Results

Hi everyone. we’ve embraced the new BP layout and now it’s time to welcome our favorite contest entries for July. I continue to seek participation from folks that have rarely, or never been a part of this thread. We’d love to see your favorites!

BP has gone thru the July EPs, but if history remains intact, they’ll do another pass-thru soon. Good luck, everyone!

Some helpful hints for attaching photos into a BP Forum Thread, if you're unfamiliar with the process:

1) Sign into BP. IF YOU HAVEN'T entered the Contest for today, you can use the "Photo ID" method to pull an existing image (from your Member Center) into your Reply here. This avoids a duplicate image upload to your Member Center. Note the Photo ID# of the image you wish to include here (visible in your Member Center) then return to this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, and choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down (even though you won't actually be uploading a file.) Click Submit; at the next screen, populate the "Photo ID" field shown over at the right. Skip the other text fields on that screen, check the boxes at the bottom, and Submit.

2) IF YOU HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest for today, you can't use the Photo ID method *today*. Either wait until tomorrow to reply here first, or upload a copy of the image (from your PC) and attach to this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.

If you're uploading a duplicate, I suggest titling it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later on. This can also help nudge BP viewers to go find the original image in your gallery, if they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, first try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate... which may one day be deleted.

From Usman Bajwa...If you want to post more than one thumbnail in your response…once you have put the ID # in before entering the contest for the day and you are on the next screen which says something like 'the image has been added', just don't close the browser window, use the back arrow button on the browser window which should take you to the same page where you had initially entered the ID#. All you have to do now is change the ID with the one which you want and press enter again. And voila you'll have two images as thumbnails. You can append as many images as you want by using the back button of the browser window. It’s counter-intuitive, but it works.

I saw this young woman sitting and texting while waiting for her train at Union Station in LA. I recently discovered the late Vivian Maier's incredible B/W photography and it inspired me to turn several of my images in to B/W using NIK Silver Efex and Topaz B/W Adjust filters.

Jill, you're the first to arrive for the count-down party; you win a free trip to Austria. I'll contact you shortly to work out the details. :-)

I like both your photos...very diverse. Hard to believe your flower one doesn't have an EP, but I think we can all relate to many of our favs being EP-less. And nice job experimenting with the B/W people scenes. Best of luck in the SF round!

Hey Carolyn, welcome aboard! Flag Day is outstanding...sure to see that one again. Very creative design/back-drop. For Oklahoma Dreaming...was that in the "Filters" theme? I submitted three photos in the MT and no luck at all. Hopefully you'll get an EP the 2nd time thru. Good luck!

Thank Ken for hosting the monthly thread. Much appreciated.

Well, I am happy to report that one of my faves image which had been getting no Ep in the last three months, is finally with an EP. I will be also sharing another fave which did not get an EP, at least yet.

Good luck to you all on your hopefuls and hoping to see many more turn Gold this time.

A real tough one, July -- I finally managed to make more than 3 or 4 entries (11!) and as a result, have 3 or 4 top favs among those, for various different reasons...

The railing image - finally made a visit (more of an ironwork pilgrimage!) to this Long Island Vanderbilt mansion, which contains a huge collection of wrought iron by Samuel Yellin's firm (he designed monumental iron for Washington Cathedral over more than a decade, back in the '20s and '30s.)

The lotus - I hadn't been to the aquatic gardens in years, and I don't normally like my 70-300 very much; plus, it continually proved to be too short -- I really needed a 400 or 500 for some of the flowers I really wanted to capture. But I was thrilled with this one, and how, exposing for the bright bloom, the greenery at back darkened up very nicely.

The DC evening - Brand new BP Member Louise Wolbers was visiting DC from Australia, and we met up to do some shooting; she had an astonishing 200-400 lens, and I was always envious of the streetlight starpoints that Canon's high-end lenses produced at narrow apertures / high f-stops (vs. my 70-300's mushy starpoints.) Her killer lens did not disappoint, rendering sharp, sharp, sharp 18-point starbursts, just from using f/20.

Elegance and Decay
A former Vanderbilt mansion on Long Island, built in a Spanish/Mediterranean style, features many decorative wrought iron appointments throughout the property, particularly on the exterior. Here, a railing turns the corner on a terrace staircase, the stucco walls beginning to show cracks and some crumbling in places. The ironwork here is by Samuel Yellin, who spent 12 years of his career designing and producing fantastic wrought iron for Washington National Cathedral.

A Capitol View
This weekend, I made some new photography friends from Australia, and took them to Arlington Cemetery
for sunset views over The National Mall. Not only did we enjoy the newly-revealed Washington Monument
(no longer encased in scaffolding for earthquake repairs) but I was able to pop my camera onto their impressive
EF 200-400 f/4L for a few shots, and enjoy the crisp, 18-point starbursts forming on streetlights at
about f/20, vs. my zoom which makes very "mushy" starbursts in comparison.
For some scale, the domed US Capitol Building is 3.3 miles, straight-line measure, from where we stood taking this photo.

Hey Chris, welcome to the fun. Glad to see you entered a few more photos this month...and a great variety you have. I'm sure we'll see one, if not more hit Staff Fav as a minimum.

Ref the nice lens. Yeah...I can dream too but until I win the lottery, I'll have to stick with my lower-end lens. :-)

Good luck in the next round!

Almost forgot to stop in today before I entered - but here I am.
Not such a great month for me, I think - last month I had many, many favorites and it took forever to narrow it down; this month I don't feel strongly even about the ones I'm going to post LOL

The heron was captured in Florida last year and though it's a pretty common sight for many of you, for a Nebraska gal, it was a thrill - so that's my EP favorite.

My non EP post is this guy drinking a cup of coffee at a local diner - actually the owner or at least the person in charge the day I was there as he gave me permission to shoot the place and was happy to pose. So sorry to disappoint the "real" candid fans out there - this one was set up.

Little Blue Heron
Little Blue Heron
This beautiful young long-legged bird is a juvenile little blue heron, photographed at the Venice Area Audubon Society rookery in Venice, Florida. Though the adults have bluish-gray plumage, the juveniles are completely white and very difficult to distinguish from a juvenile snowy egret. However, the legs and feet of the little blue heron are a pale, chalky pea-green and the legs and feet are nearly the same color whereas the snowy egret's legs are a brighter lime green and have contrasting yellow feet.

Hey Nikki, I'm glad you made it to the countdown thread. I'm sure you'll have a super month, like always...love the heron shot. And the diner shot is cool too, in B/W. I need to go to that Omaha diner in the Old Market and photograph the inside. Maybe one day... Good luck this month and hopefully we'll see Staff Favs soon, along with the 2nd pass-thru for the EPs.

I fell for Nikki's diner shot the first time I saw it. A real nice work!

I have two hopefuls for this month that are my favs. The first one is my July forth entry. It was placed into the animals category but could have easily gone into the monthly theme. "Independence".

My second photo is my entry that I placed into our Mass Upload Day; "Photoshop Filters and Plug-ins". As some of you all ready know, I am a late owl and I spent quite a bit of time playing with filters and plug-ins last month due to the theme. Had some fun!

Hope everyone has fun in BP. I do think that BP made some nice changes with the new site.

Welcome Errick, Susan, and Peggy....Three folks in a short time; good to have you join!

Errick, nice work with the eagle and the autumn scene. Both are super and the autumn scene is rather surreal.

Susan, I like your squirrel shot. I struck out on the MT so maybe we'll both have some success during the 2nd EP pass-thru..assuming BP does the pass-thru this month. And you did get good with the lighting on the pop-corn...my stomach just growled! :-)

Peggy, nice eyes to spot the beauty of the backlit keys. Very nice details/contrast. I also like the elements of your Curlicues shot; maybe a resubmit in Elements next time.

Good luck to each of you, in the SF round!

Didn't the default "be notified when someone responds to thread" used to be "yes"? I'm just now figuring out that I have to remember to check the box so I'll get notified - that will take a little getting used to. I kept thinking, why isn't anyone playing in the countdown thread this month LOL

Janet, you can append the photo from your gallery using the Alternate Image Upload option...but you have to do this BEFORE you enter a contest image. Otherwise, the Alternate Image Upload user interface won't allow you to do it.

Tomorrow, I'll post specific instructions for doing this, as the ones I posted at the beginning of this thread are based on the earlier version of BP. I just don't remember how to do it from memory, and since I've already uploaded a contest photo today, I need to wait until tomorrow. And I need to do this anyway, in advance of posting the August countdown thread next month.

Here’s how to post a gallery photo into this forum thread. Be sure to do this BEFORE you enter a photo into the contest.

1. Jot down the PhotoID # of the photo you wish to share. To determine your PhotoID, go to the little Pancakes icon, then click “My Photos”, then “Manage/Enter.” The PhotoID is right below the number.

2. Go to the Countdown Contest thread. Click “Respond” at the bottom of the page.

3. Type in whatever you wish; e.g., “Here’s my Fav image for the month.”

4. Click the “Select” button below the text input box, and select “1.” Toggle on “Notify” box if you wish to be notified. Click “Submit."

5. The Image Uploader appears. On the right-hand side, you’ll see an input box for the PhotoID (from step 1). Type it in then click “submit your photo.” Then, return to the forum thread and you’ll see your photo.

Hey guys, congrats to everyone for your SFs, finalists, and golds. We had a really good showing, like always.

Three tidbits. First, today is the last day of the month so if you like to save off your contest entries for August, now is the time to do it. Secondly, next month's BP theme is "Bokeh or Beautiful Blur." And thirdly, the August contest entries are sharply up from the last few months. They may end up with nearly 8000 entries this month, as compared to 5800 last month.

Just my opinion... I think some of these photos that were passed over are spectacular. Re-enter!

I agree about the being past over photos we enter. The judges have quite a task in doing the judging and keeping up with it.
I think many of the photos for the month of July were passed over even though there are some beautiful works of art in the galleries.
First, don't take it personally if you don't get an EP.
Secondly, do as has been suggested here, re-enter the pictures
Thirdly, as artist we see the beauty of things that others may like or may not care for. Art in any form is and always has been in the eye of the beholder.
Forth, we have a wonderful family of gifted artist here that we can share our photos with, get encouragement from, and yes, learn from by talking to them, asking questions, studying their works.
Fifth, we get to see the beauty of the world where others can not see. We have been blessed in that.
Don't let the fact that a picture you enter not getting a EP take away from all the wonderful moments we share together.
That's just my opinion. Thanks for the forum and the chance to have a say.
