I found it was very hard to react in time to catch one in flight with wings in a good position. It took many, many shots to get one I was satisfied with.

Satisfied is the right word, Philip. I would be very happy with this result. This is the pay off of making many, many exposures. That diligence, combined with skill, is what it takes to make a lovely study of a bird in flight, like this. Well done!
