River Electric

The oddly colored stone and water of the Uncompahgre River near Ouray, Colorado caught my attention and I knew I had to capture one of nature's unique sites. The funcky colors are the result of the ore rich soils, which initially brought mining to the area. While the surface soil looks pretty normal, the eroded rock on the river bed exposed the interesting colors. I scouted around until I found some Silver Lupine in their prime to add another splash of color. Canon 24mm T/S lens, f11, polarizing filter, Kodak 100GX.

What a beautiful image you have captured. I love the unique colors in the water to the beautiful flowers along the side. Well done #303816Harry Lichtman September 01, 2005
Thanks Roxanne - It was a very unique river. A rain storm had just passed through and provided some even lighting. I especially liked the way lupine leaves capture and hold rain drops on their leaves, so I wanted to try and capture that aspect if I could.Harry #1791988

Beautiful capture Harry. If I had a stream near me I would not want it to be that color! But it is pretty in the picture. #1792094Chris Macer September 01, 2005
Interesting colors in this one, Harry. #1792276Doug Caldwell September 01, 2005
Very striking. Fascinating that the ores wouldn't have leached out over the eons. I guess there are times that one has to explain, "No, really! It's not mine tailings pollution!" #1793782Harry Lichtman September 02, 2005
I don't know - maybe it is! Not if you ask the mining companies.HArry #1795512
