Uploaded: June 03, 2014 13:05:40 | Entered: June 03, 2014 13:21:55
The Winter Palace was commissioned by Czarina Elizabeth and now houses the Hermitage Museum which is the largest in the world with over 1057 rooms none identical and 117 staircases and houses over 3 million items. The main staircase is the Jordan Staircase (named after river Jordan for baptism of Jesus). It has large marble steps and marble statues going from the Rastrelli Gallery to the first floor. It can not be photographed in one capture. At the center landing is the statue of Justice.

The Winter Palace (Hermitage Museum) extends over 20 acres and total perimeter is over one mile. It was another masterpiece of Rasrrelli. After a fire in 1837 it was restored inside along the lines of Russian Classicism but retained Rastrlli's light and graceful baroque. It contains the most valuable collections of art in the world. #1575161John Connolly June 03, 2014

Well, wow. I imagine this sort of incredible opulence for the few is what eventually led to the revolution. "Let them eat cake" Russian style. Must have been an amazing experience seeing this. #11060083Emile Abbott June 05, 2014
