Thank you all so much. I'm very happy to see this as a finalist. It got quite a funny story;I was thinking about submiting a couple of photos to the "Black and White Spider Awards 2004", but had just one that I was really pleased with as a BW. So I dived into my archives, looked through the series of "marble macros", and tried out this as a BW. It's a great learning experience, to find how to get the best BW out of a color photo.
Mostly, I used channel mixer, selective toning, gradient map, contrast adjustment and USM. Often on a different layer, so I had more control.
I submited it to the contest with another shot of mine (H2O Abstract - the Slide BW), and much to my surprise this one won 1.prize in the Abstract category, and the other one came in second. To top it off, the two together gave me a 2nd. place as "Photographer of the Year" in the same competition!
This also incouraged me to look more inot BW, as I have felt a bit intimidated about that before, often ending up with toning it one way or the other, thinking BW converting was more for the pro's.
