**SMALL BUT MIGHTY** ACBP - Elective [Details ]
Uploaded: August 09, 2008 08:12:08
To round out my elective selections I felt I needed to add this image because it shows my love of and ability to take good macro shots. I spent all summer getting this chance which proves to me that I can be patient in order to get the perfect shot - a quality that all good photographers need to succeed in capturing the quintessential shot. The conditions had to be just right: overcast or deep shade, shallow depth of field to showcase the bird, and just to be able to get a hummingbird at rest. I was practically holding my breath the entire time I was shooting because it had to be hand-held under not-the-best conditions.
Set-up: Hand-held, ISO 800, aperture wide open at f/5.6 with a shutter speed of 1/50 second!
Exif: F Number: 5.6, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/50 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 800, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 300.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 40D

Now..... perfection..... what else could you ask for! Excellent Debbie!! #976790Debbie E. Payne August 09, 2008
I can't. Although I have worked on about a dozen other images from this shoot, I keep coming back to this one as the best. No telling what the judges will think...I like it and that is what counts the most. #6293167Susanne V. Schroeder August 13, 2008
Such a wonderful capture of this little hummer. I find them very challenging to shoot. Well done, Debbie!! #6309329Debbie E. Payne August 14, 2008
Thank you Susanne! I tried all summer long to get this shot and now I am happy. They will be around for another month or so, and I'm hoping that I can "catch" her again!! #6313586Christina N. Seuser August 26, 2008
Wonderful Debbie, everything about this shot is perfect! Congrats on the EP! #6373315Debbie E. Payne August 26, 2008
Thank you Christina. I would like to see this one go further, but you never know what the judges are going to do. He was so hard to catch -- took me all summer to get just the "right" one. #6373324Irene Colling September 01, 2008
I would be jumping off of the roof-top with excitment if I took a picture this nice. I love it. #6396950Debbie E. Payne September 01, 2008
Then you must have jumped off a lot of rooftops because your images are truly amazing. I took many that day but this remains my favorite one. How are you about culling out your images? I have a hard time doing this and am looking for pointers -- what to keep, what to pitch!! #6397102Aimee C. Eisaman September 02, 2008

This was my project in-the-making all summer. It took me nearly that long to get him just so. I hope he comes back next year so I can make him my summer project next year as well. I always feel so humbled when I get a finalist and see everyone else's work. Of course I'd love to see this go further, but I'm mostly glad that I was able to "capture" his beauty just for me! #6492672Michelle Alton September 22, 2008
It's magnificent...in every possible way. Congratulations on your huge success! #6493509Debbie E. Payne September 22, 2008
Thank you, Michelle. I was SO EXCITED to be able to catch him being still that I almost didn't breathe while shooting him. This one was the best. So I guess you can say that these littlest of creatures can take your breath away! #6494096Sam Britt September 22, 2008
Congratulations, fantastic finalist, Debbie! #6494292Debbie E. Payne September 22, 2008
Thanks, Sam and good luck with your beautiful smouldering flower. I'm still perturbed that I can't get this filter for my computer.. It does such dramatic things to a beautiful image to start with. #6495950Joan E. Hoffman September 23, 2008
YES! I knew this one was a winner... I hope it goes to the next round! #6497026Corinne M. Thompson September 23, 2008

Awesome winning image....congratulations!!!! #6527281Debbie E. Payne September 29, 2008
Thank you Donna, Dominick and LInda. This was my all-consuming "project" this summer and it took me all season to get him sitting still. I am so glad that I work in digital or I'd really be broke buying film on hummingbirds. #6529809Ulysses A. Villamin October 02, 2008
Cute and beautiful!! Gratz on the win :) #6543761Debbie E. Payne October 02, 2008
Thank you Ulysses. I am particularly proud of this one because animals are not my strength and these are nearly impossible to get clearly in focus. He was a cooperative little soul for this evening shot. (He was probably tired) #6543928Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
