This dog was up for adoption at The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago. Shortly after I made the photo, he found a new home.

Very touching image so well taken, John!! #4115597Chris Budny March 31, 2007
Glad to see this rework in... I think this is the best crop, seeing it again. #4117201Nikki McDonald April 01, 2007
First time I've seen this--it's very powerful. The DOF on those never-ending bars strengthen both the story and the design. Wonderful detail and clarity on the paw. #4118332John Caruso April 01, 2007
Lorraine, Melissa, Chris, and Nikki--I really appreciate you taking a look and commenting. I'm glad the photo worked for you. And thank you to everyone who suggested this alternate crop. It really has transformed the photo. #4119243

Thank you very much, Gail! #4121816Nikki McDonald April 02, 2007
Just saw this come up in Editor's First Picks, John. Congratulations. #4122437John Caruso April 02, 2007
Thanks for the heads-up, Nikki! I appreciate it. #4122446Carol Teal April 02, 2007
Yes, I saw this under Editor's Picks too. A very emotional image John and I am so glad the dog found a good home. Being that my first career was a vet assistant, I really feel for the animals that are unwanted and unloved. Pet overpopulation is such a real problem that even if you emptied out all the shelters for a day, they would be full again in about a week or less. There are too many pets and not enough homes. Both my cats are spayed. #4123312John Caruso April 03, 2007
Thanks for your message, Carol. I agree that overpopulation is a terrible problem. Fortunately, stride have been made in the past 10 years or so (at least here in Chicago), and overall shelter intake and euthanasia numbers have decreased while adoptions and spay/neuters have increased. Thanks again for looking! #4124703Kara L. Hendricks April 04, 2007
Just saw this under Editors Pics... I love it John... The vertical crop makes ALL the difference.... You have a winner...:) #4130408John Caruso April 04, 2007
Wow, thanks Kara! You make me blush! #4130431Mitch Spence April 13, 2007
I really love that you made the paw so small in the photo. It emphasizes the isolation of this pup. You know, when I looked at the thumbnail, the shape of the paw looks like a small animal with its nose sticking out. #4163426John Caruso April 13, 2007
Thanks Mitch! As always, I apprecaite you taking a look. I never realized that about the thumbnail...I'll have to look at it with fresh eyes! Thanks again. #4163503Datha Y. Thompson April 15, 2007
One of my Favorites in your gallery John!! I LOVE everything about this image and the message is Powerful :0)Su Sana E. P April 15, 2007
Very touching image!! Great EYE and capture, John!! #4171457Nikki McDonald April 15, 2007
I have to go on record as being with those who think you have a winner here, John. Every time I see this photo--which was fairly frequently when it was in Editor's Picks and is now every time I open this discussion thread to read the new posts :) --I like it more. It's like a really good book that just keeps speaking to you. I really hope the judges experienced this as they worked their way from semi-semi-finalists to finalists. #4171579John Caruso April 16, 2007
Thanks so much, Datha, SuSana, and Nikki! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your very kind words. #4173931Carol Teal April 16, 2007
I agree with Mitch that in the thumbnail it looks like a small animal (I thought a ferret at first). This is a very moving image John. #4174312John Caruso April 16, 2007
Thank you very much for looking, Carol! #4174348Colleen Farrell April 18, 2007
This is such a poignant image, John--your composition and DOF make it really outstanding. I can see the SPCA using this on the cover of their magazine. It's definitely a winner, in my book. And I'm so glad he was adopted!! :D #4182645John Caruso April 18, 2007
I really appreciate you taking a look and leaving such warm words. Thanks Coleen! #4182839Katarina Mansson April 19, 2007
I loved this before - I love it in this new crop even more! The image is striking - it tells me a lot and makes me feel a lot. The lines are superb, the clarity, the DOF and the POV as well. I cross my fingers it will also get the appropriate recognition by the judges John! #4185230John Caruso April 19, 2007
Wow, thank you very, very much, Katarina, for your very kind comments. I always love hearing from you! #4185632Chris Budny April 24, 2007
