A lens hood will keep sunlight from creating glare on your images, while at the same time it will protect the lens itself from external damage (i.e. bumping or dropping).

Hi Nagham, The job of the lens is to project an image of the outside world onto the film or in the case of a digital, the chip. The shape of the lens resembles a lintel seed, that’s how the name “lens” came about. This shape of the lens has been carefully chosen. This shape causes light to bend thus light rays are redirected to form an image on the surface of the film/chip. Man has never made a perfect lens meaning some of the light rays are not properly redirected. Rays become misdirected inside the camera and they bathe the film/chip with stray light that degrades the image. We call this misdirected light “flare”. If a lot of flare is allowed to enter the camera it will be cause the image to be degraded. Photographers are always wise if they do everything in their power to reduce flare. A lot of flare is generated by stray light striking the lens from the side. Photographers can avoid this flare by fitting their camera with a lens hood. The hood acts just like the brim of a hat shielding the eye from the bright sun above. Additionally, a lens hood provides some protection from damage just like your eyebrows protect your eyes. You also need a lens hood at night when there are very bright lights that might affect the contrast of your shots. I use a hood also to protect the front glass from finger prints and to make my camera look better. :)
