How to Properly Expose When using a Filter

How do you properly expose a picture when using a 2 stop graduated neutral grade filter?

If using a SLR with ttl metering, just use it normaly, if an older camera or rangefinder w/o meter, then add 2 stops exposure.

Actually...with a GRADUATED ND filter you would be better off metering the shadows (darker areas) with the filter off.
You would then apply the filter with the dark half covering the highlights to take the shot.

Sorry, didn't notice the "graduated" part, I've just bought a 2 stop ND filter and having fun with it
