How do I publish my own book? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and am very interested to know how someone goes about getting a book published. I would like to make a coffee table book as well as a travel book in the future but have no idea how to start? Do you first search out a publisher and pitch the idea you have then once they sign you make the book, or is it the opposite, you make the book then look for a publisher to buy it? Also where can you get a book created, I make your word document a hardcover book? Are there any books that explain what is needed to create a book and how to get it published? thanks

good luck dude. create the subject first then pitch. it takes lots of money and lots of time to create a coffee table book so the subject has to appeal so as to make profit - otherwise pay for your own self indulgent book. It will be very expensive. check out www.childoftibet.com

Are you thinking general publishing or print on demand publishing? If you have an Mac OSX system and use iPhoto, you can have your prints printed out into a book format through Apple's partners. Kinkos and several other places will also do photo books. But the quality of these places is "okay". You can take your idea to a publisher, but you will need at least a subset of pictures detailing what you are thinking of, a portfolio to demonstrate your ability, an example or two of previously published works, and an explaination of who you are marketting to and what the potential for a market for the book will be. Basically, you will need to convince them that they will make money doing a long run print of your book. Failing that, you can always go to a self-publishing place like Xilibris.com to have your own photo gallery book published and sold through them and amazon. It just depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. If you are new to the field and don't have a reputation as a great or awesome photographer yet, you might find many roadblocks to getting a publisher to pickup your idea. In which case, you would go to a POD(Print On Demon) printshop like xlibris.com and have them do it. Good Luck!
