Jen, while college is terrific for a lot of things, attending one does not guarantee you will gain the skills required to do something as specific as portrait photography. There are some photo schools at which you can learn the craft side of the business - lighting, composition, how to actually run the business, etc. So you don't need to go to college to learn those things. But portrait shooting is more than just knowing how to focus and watch for distracting explosions in the background - it has to do with connecting with your subjects, making them feel less self-conscious in front of the camera, and in general being able to work with people (unless you're talking about pet portrature) well.

Hello Jen, Short answer? Nope..Not at all. I'll echo Bob's comments. Now, to be a well paid portrait shooter is another story all together. This aspect of the business is just that; BUSINESS!..and (this) is probably the number reason most good photographers who desire to earn a living, or just supplement their income usually fail. All the best, Pete
