It is so hot here - in the 90"s - that even the bees are too hot to stay inside. Actually this is how they keep the hive cool, the ones on the entrance are flapping their wings to circulate the air! #1473601

Nice composition. #10218966

Last time I got that close to a hive I got 2 stings and no usable pictures. #10219033

I had forgotten that you had bees. To me, it feels like this could be brightened just a bit. #10219443

Teresa H. Hunt July 08, 2012

Ummm . . I wouldn't be getting that close. Bee's are pretty facinating when you start learning the things they do for the hive.

I was thinking there might be a tiny bit of a tilt, but I'm guessing it's just my eyes. #10219698

I just bet they are hard to take a picture of because they are always moving. I agree a little brighten would be good.

oh my it has been so hot here. the heat index as been 110 to 115 for the past 5 days. its really bad everything her looks like its august not the first of july. they said everying is 5 week ahead of schedule for heat. not much fun!!!! you don't want to go outside at all. I am watering my flower twice a day. #10219946

These guys were busy and didn't seem to mind me. I lightened it up and tried to straighten the tilt some, but I still think it may be off a tad.
It is suppose to start cooling off, we just really need some rain for the gardens. We have been hauling water to the garden we have across the road and up the hill, but oh my it is all so dry. #10220487

Sorry I forgot the picture. #10220490

Great capture of all of these little guys. I think the edited version looks great and don't see anything else it needs. #10220709

Carla Capra Anderson July 09, 2012

The edits sure do look nice. I really enjoy how the hive contrasts nicely with the bees. #10221431

You're good, girl! You go from great big beautiful horses to itty, bitty bees. I am fascinated by bees. If you maybe did a square crop and had enough pixels I think you could have a picture within a picture and it could be a good candidate for an Element of Design submit due to the pattern the bees make. Just a thought! #10221476

Dale Hardin July 10, 2012

Nice contrast with the hive and the bees and your slow shutter speed helped give a feeling of movement with their cooling wing motion.

would love to get this close to a hive for macros someday. #10223261

Beth Spencer July 10, 2012

Thanks everyone. Debbie, I wouldn't have thought of that, so Thank you very much. I did 3 squares but on the last one I rotated it when I cropped and I really like this one. Thanks. #10223708

Aimee C. Eisaman July 11, 2012

No way...that is really interesting that they do that. What cool little insects they are and they make honey....Mmmmm! I really like the square image with the diagonal comp although I think I would like it better with everything being super sharp. So maybe you could grab another shot like this with a higher aperture and shutter speed next time. :~) #10224701

Aimee, here is a story for you and some pictures to follow. I worked a 12 hour shit today in the ER. We had 3 patients today stung by bees and having allergic reactions.
so I go home and Rocky is waiting for me. He has a swarm of bees up in the trees (pict 1), He has no way to get them down, so he shoots the tree limb, took several times, got parts of the swarm to come down. He is not sure he found the queen. I keep telling him, he may have knocked off her crown (ha! Ha) So now they are heading for the nuke box. I got some pictures but am tired, so this is all I am putting on tonight. Just thought you might enjoy this. The size of the hive is huge.. Enjoy!! #10225917

Beth Spencer July 11, 2012

I don't know why my pictures are on here twice. Sorry. #10225933

Aimee C. Eisaman July 12, 2012

That is crazy....can't believe they are hanging up so high in that tree. Wonder what made them leave to begin with. Do they do that often? #10226312

Michael Kelly level-classic July 12, 2012

Wow interesting story and well captured in photos. I don't know much about bee keeping and this is fascinating stuff. #10226614
