This is Junior my sister's step-horse. She was making him exercise in the arena and the sun was shining on him as he ran around and showed off.. #1472858

Great lighting on him, b9rh. He is a beauty and I think you caught the motion well, too. #10213195

Beth what a great capture....I love the lighting and the dust being thrown up giving us a nice motion feel to the image. well done...!!! #10213262

The light in this one is awesome. Love how it makes the horse and the dust pop from the rest of the image. To make it even more drastic you could darken any background elements that caught the light too. :~) Esp those on the right side and the greenery above the horses back end. #10213712

Love this. Whenever I see a horse he is always eating. Never get to see one in action like this.

Agree with Aimee's observations and recomendations. When you have wonderful light like this a bit of enhancement can do wonders. There are a number of ways to make the changes.

My first choices would be selective multiply blending and the second would be using a 50% gray layer for dodging and burning. #10213900

I love the lighting in this shot...what is a step-horse? #10214342

Nice stop action Beth...I was actually going to suggest opening the shadows in the to improve the contrast between the dark light elements as opposed to Aimee's suggestions..I would also then tone the highlights a hair, only about 1-2% #10214543

Great capture! I love the lighting. And the dust blowing behind the horse gives you a feel for how fast he's moving.

I'm curious to see both Aimee and Tony's suggestions #10214691

Thanks, I attempted changes. Dale, my sister had her horse in the arena and was making him exercise. It was a lot of fun to watch, because he was showing off. Lisa, she calls him her step-horse, because the horse actually belongs to her husband's stepdaughter, but my sister is leasing him for now.
I tried to edit 3 ways, for Tony I lightened shadows and brought the highlights down. Aimee, I did selective dodging and burning and Dale, I did the selective multiply blend with a layer mask. I tried the gray but was not sure what you meant for that so what did you mean? #10216112

Dale Hardin July 05, 2012

Beth, what I meant was to create a new layer filled with 50% grey. You do that by holding down the alt key while you click on the new layer icon. This opens a dialog box. Click on the down arrow and select overlay and then tick the box that says to fill with 50% grey.

With this new gray layer highlighted, use the dodge tool at about 30% opacity to brighten selected areas. Use the burn tool at a lower opacity to darken selected areas. Using this method gives you lot more control when dodging and burning and is not distructive since it is on it's own layer.

If you go to my blog at www.dalehardin.blogspot.com and look on the right side for my tutorials blog, you will find a tutorial called. "Change the sky without making a selection" It is a PDF file and starting on page four it illustrates the technique.

Thought I would share a few more pictures of the horses. #10217587

Wow Beth! The rich golden lighting on this horse in motion and also on the dust he's kicked up is beautiful. Must have been early a.m. or that sweet golden light in the evening. I like Dale's the best because it highlights the beautiful golden brown of the horse, his the motion of the dust kicked up by his action. Darkening the background (in my humble opinion) really makes it pop. Nice capture!
