Charred Door Handle
Uploaded: April 29, 2012
---
This is the entrance to the Freight Elevator at Viking Mill (see story in Remarks area) in the East Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia.
---
This building is located several blocks from the warehouse that burned down two weeks ago, and took the lives of two firefighters. The conflagration was sensational, with burning embers being "launched" as high as 800 feet into the air. One such ember landed in the elevator shaft of this building, destroying it.

Since 2008, a flood of these creative people have been interested in and renting work space at Viking Mill.

Some of Viking Mill's tenants include figurative artists, photographers, fashion designers, dressmakers, 3D artists, jewelers, a leading Philadelphia muralist, carpenters, musicians, general contractors, a music recording studio, and a glass blowing studio.
----
All of Viking Mill's tenants use one another as resources to expand their social and professional networks with the goal of making their artistic aspirations the source of their livelihood.
------
Space may be rented from 45 cents to 55 cents per square foot.

It's so sad to hear, see and know about fires. What one ember can do. It only takes a spark.Great reporting and image, as always, Michelle!
