Loggerhead Shrike [Contest Staff Favorites February 2015]
Uploaded: February 02, 2015 18:59:05 | Entered: February 02, 2015 19:00:29
Today I went to photograph burrowing owls and instead found myself spending time with a pair of loggerhead shrikes. Pretty amazing for me because I've never encountered a shrike. The loggerhead shrike is a songbird but its hunting behavior is like a raptor. It hunts lizzards, birds, small mammals and insects. The shrike doesn't have talons so it pierces its catch on barbed wire and thorns.

Perfection...from the pose, to the perch, to the colors, light, dof and excellent feather details. I have always wanted to see one of these guys...as much as I like burrowing owls, I'd do the same as you did and stalk both of them for a possible capture. A really beautiful image, Carol and a fave! #11241581Anita Hogue February 07, 2015
