Bay of Stairs
Uploaded: January 16, 2014 04:02:17
One of my favorite views in the cathedral is this stairwell leading to the north balcony; the stairs were given an elaborate, open treatment, visible from the nave. Entering at the iron gate, the stairs take 6 right-turns at landings, roughly forming a square-sided spiral upwards to the balcony. Something about the trio of arches involved - the large arch encasing the entire stairwell, then the two smaller arches on different levels - the gateway arch, and the first landing... it always appeals to me! I've tried photographing it many times, but there are always rows of chairs in the foreground (where I'm standing for this composition) so I was thrilled to try a few takes during the "Clearing of the Nave" event this week. 4-exposure HDR.

Very nice architectural image of the interior of the National Cathedral! I met photographer Colin Winterbottom at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York a couple of months ago. He was leading a photo tour there. I know that he is doing a photographic project for the National Cathedral. You may have run into him a few times. Charles #10948223Colette M. Gorgeous light, details, and capture! #10948438Nikki McDonald January 17, 2014
This is just beautiful, Chris - you have summed the appeal of the architecture up well. Your control of lighting and detail bring us a stunning portrait of this space. #10948948Chris Budny January 17, 2014
Thank you all very much! It is a happy moment to finally have a capture I like, of this scene which has long appealed to me, but long challenged my attempts to capture it in a way I like! (Though I was looking at the actual space last night again, and I already see a few more "retries" to pursue next time ;) #10948994Avril Young January 26, 2014

Thank you very much, ladies! Margie knows how I've long been struggling to get a shot at this exact location, producing an image of it that I'd really like; I'm finally happy with this one! #10987180Robert Jensen February 27, 2014
You could do a coffee table book with all the great images from there - I still to fly out there some day. #10987591Joannie Bertucci February 28, 2014
Chris, congrats on yet another outstanding architechtural image going to finalist! #10988358Chris Budny March 01, 2014
Thank you both very much… There's just such a never ending supply of subject matter at the Cathedral! Robert, you've really got to get out to DC sometime… Looking forward to giving you a tour, & shooting with you, when that happens! #10989333Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
