Excellent, Mike! I had so much fun shooting these guys last weekend, I can't wait to get out again. #1541724Dale Hardin August 24, 2013
You guys have this hummer thing down to a science, I see. Great work Mike. #10819699Michael Kelly August 25, 2013
Thanks Jeff, I like your shot too and hope to see more. They are a fun subject because I find them a challenge. They like this flower a lot so they come to it frequently, but because they are so territorial often several others will come and chase off the one looking for a snack before I can even point the camera at it. This was shot with my 400mm at about 4 feet.Thank you Dale. I don’t know about the science part, just a lot of patience waiting for the right opportunity. The long lens is a big factor too.

Your image makes me envious Mike! Am just glad I have a bunch of them out in the yard. #10820565Stephen Shoff August 25, 2013
Very nice, Mike. At at 4 feet, you don't need to worry about smoke in the air. #10820698Rita K. Connell August 25, 2013
these are awesome!!! they are so fun to watch and sometimes they will stay in place looking right at you and let you take their pictures, great captures! #10820721Susan Williams August 25, 2013
Amazing captures of an amazing little bird. Nice colors and bokeh, too. #10820759Kalena Randall August 26, 2013
Lovely shots! They look 3D to me with the detail and the softness of the bokeh. Very, very, nice! #10821429Beth Spencer August 26, 2013
WOW!!!Great shots and amazing details!! #10821690Michael Kelly August 26, 2013
Thank you Elaine! Yes, these guys are amazing and so fun to watch. Thanks Peter – I bet you could get something like these shots with your 70 -200 lens. They will let you get pretty close if you are patient and that lens focuses fairly close so don’t be envious and give it a try. They are fun to just watch though wich is what I do with them most of the time.
Thanks Stephen. Yup anything further than this and the smoke is a problem. It is getting to my eyes big time. We had one clear afternoon a few days ago when the wind direction changed, but most of the time we are sitting in a thick smelly soup.
Thanks so much Rita. Still waiting to see if your expedition caught any of these little buggers. Jeff and I seem to be shooting the same variety as the birds look almost identical but it would be nice to see some different types.
Thank you Susan! Colorful little guys and the black and blue salvia make a nice contrast with them. The Bokeh is strictly due to the 400mm focused so close it wipes the BG out entirely.
Kalena thank you so much. I thought they looked a little 3D to me too. I am glad you like them.
Thank you Beth – I do love that 400mm which I have to give credit for the detail it captures. I love the WOW.
