Description

Fort Macon, is located 1 mile from our home in Atlantic Beach, NC. The war of 1812 prompted the building of a series eastern seaboard forts for the protection of future engagements from France/Spain. Fort Macon was finished in 1934 for that purpose. This photo is where the soldiers were quartered. It is said to have more bricks the any other fort in the United States. Those bricks could not hold an 11 hour battery of canon blast when the fort fell to the Union troops in 1862. The fort grounds was used during WW2 for surveillance of German U-boats that frequented the coast. Entered for Close To Home History Theme Day - Group 101

Thanks for the information. Just watching "John Adams," an era that leads into some of this history. Excellent play of shadow, light, and texture here. #1816372
