Robert H. Manning must have been the most popular guy who ever lived in Empire, Michigan because after his death in 1989 his friends and relatives raised the funds to build this memorial lighthouse in his honor. From what I gather Mr. Manning was an avid fisherman who frequently stayed out on Lake Michigan until after sunset and often commented that a lighthouse would make his trip home easier. This memorial was lit in 1990 and is situated in a small park bordered by Lake Michigan to the west, Lake Glen to the east and Sleeping Bear Dunes to the north. Empire itself is one of the beach communities that line Michigan's western shore that makes you want to chuck it all and move there.
