Stalking the Silver Salmon [Contest Finalists September 2004]
Uploaded: September 16, 2004 08:04:57
These fishermen were circling a large school of silver salmon as they waited for the 8:00AM opening time. The trick is to be positioned to make the largest set possible in the first few minutes without getting tangled up in the other seines. There is often some very serious confrontations during this type of event.

I'm attaching a record of one of those confrontations. #169403Sharon Day September 16, 2004
WOW Gary!!! Fantastic shot and what a drama! Sounds like you have a lot of experience watching this sort of thing. Very intersting and a wonderful photo!!! #785681Gary H. Minish September 17, 2004
Thank you, Sharon! Yes, I do have some experience. I paid for a good part of my college expenses fishing on a small seiner like one of these. #786406Murry Grigsby October 16, 2004

Thank you, Murry & Len. I'm a bit surprised by this one, as I entered another fishing boat photo, shot on the same day, that I like much better than this one. #851984Patrick Campbell May 03, 2005
What an idyllic setting......not!!! With the birds, the mountains, and the lighting, I can see why the judges picked this one, Gary, but your comments and the second photo are even more interesting. Just like two companies competing for market share! #1317123Gary H. Minish May 03, 2005
Thanks, Patrick. Its essentially the same thing except this tends to get a little more personal. In fact, I did a little digging and found out that the two boat owners involved in this event were best friends (at least when they started the season). As a result, the victim in this scenario decided not to press charges but I understand the friendship is not what it used to be. #1317228Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
