White Christmas [Photos of Movement]

2/25/08, Tokiwa Park, Ube, Yamaguchi, Japan. Big lesson today! Up until now I've lacked confidence shooting action in anything but sports mode, but my new Canon 50D has forced me to meet new challenges. It goes to totally unacceptable ISO in automatic modes and the noise is horrendous. So, today I studied up on settings, and though I didn't go completely manual, operated from TV priority. In the advice I read, some said only 100 or 200 ISO, others suggested as high as 400. Well, I tried both 200 and 400 and also some sports mode. Only the images with 200 IS0 came out with reasonable noise levels. Used my 100-400L. Spot metering was also suggested, but don't think it worked well when shooting into a flock of swiftly flying birds--I like the eye to be dead sharp and the movement was too fast to get the eye every time. I'll try different focusing next time.

Great shot Susan, you got fantastic sharpness on this one and wonderfully composed too, impressive for an action shot. I'll look forward to future captures as you perfect your 50D technique. I've been considering upgrading my 20D and seriously considering the 5D MKII. Hope you had a fantastic Christmas and here's hoping for a fabulous New Year with more very inspiring shots coming from your awesome gallery! #1057516Linda A. Braddock December 27, 2008
Susan, Fantastic Capture, you did very good, I have not been able to do this.Susan Jane Allen December 27, 2008
Thanks for the kind comments Reynaldo, Linda and Lakshimi! After an outing yesterday, where I shot in JPEG instead of RAW, I advise you NOT to get this camera! Yes, indeed, the noise levels in JPEG are incredibly low and backgrounds are smooth as silk, but that's because they run some in-camera Noise Ninja-type effect and it totally destroys all detail, indiscriminately. If you run Noise Ninja on your computer, at least you can decide where or where not to apply it. So, what do I have here? A camera where I cannot shoot in JPEG and one with which I can only shoot in RAW in ISO 100 or 200, unless perhaps I have PERFECT exposure to shoot in 400. I feel like I've been ripped off, and Ken Smith and friends were RIGHT. Don't buy it. #6948392Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
