This impressive and legendary Colombian hill, also known as "teeth shaped hill" awakens tourist's great interest. Alter the sun has set, the sanctuary adds this place a final mystic touch. As you raise your look from any point of the city, it's impossible not to run into the Hill that from its 3,152 meters above sea level has been looking over to Bogota for 402 years now.
Over and above its natural beauty, the possibility to get close to God and the faith that this place evokes, are also, according to local people, some of the hill's main attractions.
The construction of the sanctuary crowning its peak was authorized by the president of the New Kingdom of Granada, Don Juan de Borja. In addition, Don Pedro Solis decided to build a monastery, which was finally finished in 1657.
In order to ascend this hill it is necessary to use the aerial passenger tramway though it is also possible to ascend it by foot since there is a cobbled path that still remains there. #1182399

Gastronomy in MonserrateWith its two main restaurants, both offering excellent and varied menus, gastronomy is another great attraction of the area.
In both restaurants, Casa San Isidro and Santa Clara, prevails a pleasant and particular atmosphere.
Hence, tourist will enjoy themselves at any of them. What is more, national and international food is offered at both.
Pilgrimage and Sanctuary in Monserrate
Colombians have made pilgrimages for more than four centuries now, climbing Monserrate to meet the Fallen Lord. In this important place of pilgrimage the Black virgin can be worshiped as well.
At the end of the sanctuary the object of pilgrimage of so many devotes, the image of Christ, can be appreciated. This image, the Fallen Lord of Monserrate, was sculpted by Pedro de Lugo y Albarracín in 1556.
Legend has it that the image of the Fallen Christ arrived to the sanctuary by mistake but nobody could remove it from this place. What is more, it became extremely heavy when people tried to take it down and light when pulled up. #7957620

It's evident that you soak in a lot of knowledge during your travels! Thanks for sharing the info in the description! The portrait looks very natural and spontaneous and you've captured the expression so well Dominick! You know, without the description I would have thought this to be in Mexico (where I live) because the T-shirt in the background has the face of an actor from an iconic comic TV show in Mexico. Very interesting :o) #8897964Les Rhoades September 13, 2010
