Life on the Farm [Contest Finalists May 2010]
Uploaded: September 09, 2009 04:15:10 | Entered: January 20, 2023 10:24:36
~The Sauer-Beckman Farmstead is a living history farm located within the 718 acres of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. Life on the farmstead is presented as it was in 1918. Park interpreters wear period clothing, do the farm and household chores as they were done at that time and also conduct tours for the visitors. Costumed interpreters also carry out the day-to-day activities of a turn-of-the-century Texas-German farm family. Some chores are seasonal, such as canning and butchering. Farm animals, however, must be cared for on a daily basis, including activities like feeding, milking, gathering eggs and slopping the hogs. Also, the house is cleaned, meals are cooked, butter is churned and cheese is made. Visitors may see the "family" scrubbing the floors with homemade lye soap, or plowing the garden with a team of horses.

There are not many of those old sulky rakes left in the country. Many disappeared when the people started making flower pot holders out of the teeth. This image is composed very well, with the chickens, old barn and shade tree it is like going back in time for sure. Well done Valarie #7928155Cathy Barrows September 09, 2009

Oh man!!! Does this ever bring back memories of farm life!!! When I was growing up on the farm, it was my job to trip the rake and make the long furrows of hay. A windrower does it now and its much easier today. The tripper would sometime snap back up and ram your foot if you weren't careful!!!Great shot, Val!!! :-) k #7929085
