Shell Cluster

Uploaded: February 13, 2012 06:56:31

Description

From what I can gather by Googling, these are brown mussels which
are usually found clumping together on wave-washed rocks.
Each one is attached to the rock by its byssus (silky filaments).
The clumping action helps hold the mussels firm against the force of the waves.
At low tide mussels in the middle of a clump will undergo less
water loss because of water capture by the outer mussels.

If you think they are anything different, please let me know
... Mussels is just my guess! :)

Happy Monday everyone!!!!! :)

Awesome tones, texture and detail Lorna!

What were you doing out in Oakville other than the obvious? Spent the first 40 years of my life living in Oakville. #9981331

Bobby, Patrick, Tammy & Mary ~ Thank you all for your great input on this image! Glad you like it! :)

Patrick ~ I'd never seen a clump like this before either! At first I thought someone joined them all together and left them on the rock, but then I figured it had to be a freak of nature! A very unusual sight! ;)

Mary ~ I have a friend who moved to Oakville and she invited us over for a visit. Since she lives very close to this park, we met her and her little girl there for a picnic before heading to her house. We had a wonderful time exploring the grounds! It's a beautiful place ... but I guess you already know that! :) #9981408

David ~ Sorry for missing you ... You snuck right in there while I was writing my last comment! Thanks for your great remark! Glad my thinking works for you! So far, no one else has made any other suggestions as to what it might be ... So perhaps I'm right! :) #9981416

They look like mussels to me Lorna, our Aussie ones form similar groups! A great capture with excellent information! #9982724

Amazing phenomenon, they're so smart to clump that way as a concerted effort against the waves and the ocean. It's a wonderful reminder of the virtues of cooperation and collaboration. Great capture Lorna. I learned something new today! :) #9983040
