Flicker at Bel-Mar [Contest Finalists April 2009]
Uploaded: April 09, 2009 10:52:48
Northern flicker on a tree in Bel-Mar Park in Lakewood, CO. I processed the image with selective color to accentuate the colors and patterns in the bird.

I think the yellow shafted northern flicker is among the most beautiful of birds in North America. And this photo proves it. #1111385Kerry Hill April 09, 2009
Beautiful capture and work, Cary!! Very well done!! #7389191Eivor Kuchta April 09, 2009
What you did really brings out the beautiful colors of this flicker. Well done, Cary! #7389847Cary Rogers April 10, 2009
Thank you for your great comments, Michelle, Kerry, and Eivor! I appreciate your supportive feedback! I think the flicker is an extremely striking bird, with it's "polka dot" feathers, black chest badge, and little red streak. Thanks again for your comments! :-) #7391694Shelly A. Amazing bird and capture. We have woodpeckers here....But never seen one of these. #7466225Cary Rogers April 30, 2009
Thank you, Shelly! This is a red-shafted northern flicker. The underside of the wing feathers and tail feathers are a reddish orange color, and the male has a red "moustache." In other parts of the country, there is the yellow-shafted variety; the undersides are yellow, and the "moustache" is moved to the back of the head. The flicker has some very distinctive calls. #7469144Janet McNeil May 26, 2009

Big congratulations, Cary! #7569257Cary Rogers May 27, 2009
Thank you Ann, and Sam! :-) I also like flickers because of how colorful their "under" feathers are, when they fly by. #7569856Colleen Farrell May 29, 2009
Fantastic capture, Cary! I love flickers. Big congrats on your finalist! #7578119Cary Rogers May 31, 2009
Thank you, Collen! I was walking around in Bel-Mar nature park, and a man saw my camera as I approached him and pointed-out two flickers he had been watching. The second flicker was on the other side of the trunk (in shade). Thanks again for your comments! #7582210Dick Jenkins June 12, 2009
