Really COOL! I love the SURREAL LOOK to this. Really a great shot! And, unfortunately there is addition of unrealistic color to the falling water which is, unfortunately altered with the age-old cliche "time exposure" photographic technique that makes moving water look like mist or sheets of velvet.
The overall effect is just plain weird. I wouldn't go to an "attraction" that looks that creepy. In my view, this does an injustice to the real overwhelming power and majestic beauty of Niagara Falls. I'm completely befuddled at BetterPhoto's judges' sense of aesthetics, composition and treatment of content.
No, i'm not Simon Cowell trying to rain on a potential star's parade. And if I were Simon Cowell, I can't see Paula and Randy not echoing my comments.
I'm a veteran photgrapher/digital imaging specialist/artist of over 30 years experience and have had my digital art exhibited at venues around the country. I showed Jim Zuckerman a Photoshop technique that is several times faster and more effective than the method he was using to bring out highlight and shadow details in high contrast photos.
If you're still skeptical and feel I'm being unfair and hypercritical you can find my bio and photographs at:
http:mnartists.org/Ashley_Wilkes. I hope that by viewing my work will help you understand where I'm coming from.
I judge my own work as I do the work of others.
And I set the bar as high for myself as I do for other artists.
Harsh as these comment may seem - my intentions
are constructive. On Nature's Edge is an ATTEMPT at creative experimentation. An attempt that comes across as so overmanipulated that it looks way more weird than striking. I feel it seriously diminishes the real spectacle of Niagra Falls rather than enhancing and paying it the tribute it deserves #6592916
Nancy (Peaches) Harker October 13, 2008
Well Lisa, I don't think it looks "CREEPY" at all, I think it beautiful, as ALL your waterfall images.Cary Rogers October 13, 2008
hmmm.... Well, THAT all having been said, I personally LIKE the surrealism of the image, and the effects that were applied, Lisa. ONE of the things I like about this treatment is that Niagara Falls is SUCH a mature subject, that a presentation like this is refreshing change. HUGE congrats on all your accolades for this image, Lisa! #6592958

Well Lisa - there are people in this world whose vision is very limited. Had they lived in the era of the great Impressionists, they'd have said the same old, tired thing. "But it isn't real!" Which is all I'll say on that --!Congratulations on your STRIKING Photo of the Day, and congrats on being published, too! Hope you won't be discouraged by the nay-sayers. I have never understood the need some people seem to have, to attack others' work. If you don't like a photo -- fine. Go to the next! Quietly. We all have different tastes. It would be a pretty boring world, if not! #6593014

Ashley ,
you obviously never shot Niagara Falls at Night.
Those "unrealistic color"s are projected on both sets of waterfalls there by the Canadian Government ,
who along with the American government felt it added to the "wonder" of the Niagara Falls at night experience.
As far as the blurring of the water
I personally think it looks great in this shot
but then again I am not a "pro" , I just know what I like to see.

Sorry my congratulations are so tardy, Lisa; I only just got the email notification. I recognized this as your image without even seeing your name from all your others we've been graced with. This is an amazing image, worthy of the Better Photo judges attention....and to be able to add yet ANOTHER perspective other than BP to see the level of your talent and be published is excellent! I'm SO happy for you! #6593636

I must respond, though, to the grossly unfair misrepresentation of my image, from the above self-proclaimed "specialist," Ashley Wilkes.
This is the e-mail I just sent her.
To Ms. Wilkes:
"This morning, I earned a POTD; on an image that had MINIMAL editing. A long exposure night shot of Niagara Falls, illuminated under colored lights (Which are shown every evening). The face of the falls are illuminated, the top of the falls remain dark under the night sky.
Slander. You have publicly ridiculed and falsely accused me of altering things I did not do. You've poisoned my image. I have never done anything to hurt or harm you.
How unfair!
How hateful!
PS: I suggest that you look up images of Niagara Falls at night and see that what I'm telling you about the light and color are correct, as it is apparent that you haven't seen them for yourself."
Regarding this image, I want to mention the amount of thought and time that went into it. I spotted this scene one night while shooting at the Falls. I returned to the Falls two more times just to get it RIGHT. The first captures turned out not as good as I would have liked. The light and timing were tricky. Tough to get the people still enough, while maintaining the silky veiling of the water. I was really happy when I saw the capture when reviewing my shots on the computer. After many attempts at getting this shot, I finally did it. THRILLED to get it acknowledged by the magazine, and again, this morning when selected as POTD.
Too bad, this moment had to be marred by the ignorant statements of one critic.
Shown is the 'Straight From the Camera' capture of this image, along with the subsequent frame. As you can see, although edited somewhat, it was not altered as Ms. Wilkes implies.
Sincerely,
Lisa Boulden

Lisa, I applaud your restraint! I don't think it was an accident that you had to upload 3 times...maybe the point was warranted and needed to be said three times! I, too, am horrified that someone like that felt the need to toot her own horn on YOUR accomplished piece of work. What? Are we supposed to be IMPRESSED that she taught Jim Zuckerman something? Many of us at BP, myself included (tooting MY horn in sarcasm) have met Jim and doubtfully find him to be the kind of person who would think he's above learning from someone nowhere NEARLY as talented and educated as he. A true professional, like yourself, is always willing to learn from whomever can offer it RESPECTFULLY!I don't see any POTD's (only one EP) on YOUR unpaid gallery, Ashley! SHAME ON YOU! #6593903

Had to do one more comment. After checking out Ms. Wilkes website, I really don't understand how she feels like she could critique anyone's else's photos like she did. Where did she get her credentials? Her work certainly does not compare with this photo in the least. #6594876Colleen Farrell October 13, 2008
Awesome, awesome photo, Lisa! Huge congratulations on your very well-deserved POTD and upcoming AAA publication! I tried to comment this morning and BP hung up. If she felt she had to do something like that it would have been kinder to email you. NOT that there is anything warrented in her statement. I guess being in the winners circle places you in a vulnerable position but you have the talent, class and support of your friends to keep you standing tall and proud. Huge congratulations for this multiple award winning image. #6644526

Congratulations on a beautiful work of art. I was just reading the "critique" and I find it plain weird especially when I looked at her work which is very manipulated. I just don't get it. Even if you did photoshop it to a new creation (which I don't feel you did) you have to have the talent and vision to come up with a stunning capture such as this. Art is and always has been in the eye of the beholder. Time and time again your work has shown what an awesome artist you are. #6659345

Hey Lisa, sorry been away for a few days and just catching up on everything. CONGRATS!!! on this supurb finalist!!! :) #6666742Joanne E. Bohenstengel November 04, 2008
Hi Lisa, This is a most beautiful photograph. The critique by Ashley was not deserved at all. I am a novice photographer and when I view all the wonderful galleries in BP, I am so humbled by all the beauty that is seen in all of them. I feel a photographer sees what he is front of him, that he feels is beautiful, funny, amazing and maybe some editing is done to "enhance" what is seen by him or her. I know very little about photography, but I do know this a BEAUTIFUL AND MAGNIFICENT PHOTO OF THE FALLS. I have never seen the falls, but thanks to you, you have given me a vision I will not forget. Congratulations on your win Lisa. I am so sorry that "ignorant" and spiteful ego-maniacal persons, such as MR. Wilkes, had marred your victory. I really like the photo. Please continue on and enjoy your art. Do not let those "Sour Grapes" interfere with your progress.MOST sincerely,
Todd MacMillan

G'day Lisa,I feel you have done a marvellous job here in capturing the night scene at Niagara Falls with all its modern lighting and the silky water, which by the way works very well with the softness of the night in my 'umble opinion.
A nice tight composition to hold the viewer's attention yet not too tight to allow the eye to wander over the scene.
The colours and exposure are beautiful and show the display at its very best.
To see what raw Nature does at Niagara I would go during the day (and probably on the Canadian side), but to see it as an artistic display I would definitely prefer the night visit after seeing this.
"No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should be encouraged to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit."

Lisa, congratulations on your POTD AND your publications! This is a stunning image. Also, congrats on standing up for yourself. Some people just have to make a beautiful day rainy which is sad and undoubtedly comes from a very insecure place. This image is worthy of accolades and beyond. Truly. Lorri #6810907

I really like this because for as many times as Niagara Falls has been photographed, you've managed to create an interesting perspective here. Very well done. #7021102
