Wow - where are you standing when you take these great shots? Do you get wet? Love how the curve of the tide goes right to the edge of the picture.Sherry McClead October 15, 2008
I was on the beach... this is a skimmboarding friend of my sons... for once I was in the right place with the sun behind me... at the right time... Sam is taking a print out of this one to school tommorrow.Sherrybear :} #6605226
Arman E. Barbuco October 15, 2008
Great capture. It is indeed a right place at a right time..Love the splash of the water. #6605258Sharon Cahn October 15, 2008

Lonnie M. Scott October 16, 2008
Don't ya just love it when one of all the shots we shoot comes out like this? Nice job and I love the expression on his face! #6608075Aimee C. Eisaman October 16, 2008
A great action shot and love seeing the expression on his face! Everything about this shot is wonderful to me other than the tilt he is on. I know it's just the way he is balancing himself, but my eye keeps going off the shot where it looks as if he would fall! Okay....now you know I'm really psycho! It's all in my head right? LOL! :~) #6608171Vicki L. Filippin October 16, 2008
Aimee's got a bit of a point, Sherry. I don't know if you had extra room on the original to the left of the surfer, and I know that the spray on the right is relevant, but if you can crop to where his head is dead on a 1/3 intersection, or the center of his body along the left 1/3 line, the flow would be easier on the eyes.Vicki L. Filippin October 16, 2008
I grabbed a screen print to see if what I was talking about made sense, and I found that if you do a horizontal flip, it flows even better...that "rule" of seeing things from left to right" thing. This way, you start out looking at the water spray, which is kewl, but then you land on the main subject..the surfer. The other way you start with the surfer and then just kinda float around the rest of the image.Sherry McClead October 16, 2008
Thank you so much Lonnie... he is such a fun kid.Aimee the angle is what pushes the spray... and he didn't fall this time... just for ou this is the whole story including before and after.

Sherry McClead October 16, 2008
I did the flip too Vicki... and yes it pulls the eye to the spray... as you can see from the orig... not much crop to work with here... (he is skimming not surfing by the way)Sherrybear :} #6608332
Sherry McClead October 16, 2008
Ok it just doesn't look right without the lean to me... and the spray is important to me... so how about this one?Sherrybear :}
of course now the sun is setting on the wrong side. #6608368
Vicki L. Filippin October 16, 2008
I agree you should keep the lean on him..it adds to the motion. I don't know that anyone else would be able to tell about the sun being on the wrong side of the image if you hadn't told them.Vicki L. Filippin October 16, 2008
I think you have just enough on the left from the original image to be able to crop from the bottom and just a bit from the right to place him on that 1/3 line, no matter if you choose to do the flip. #6608781Aimee C. Eisaman October 16, 2008
I like the flip Sherry! I really does something for this shot! And who is to know what time of day you took this! For all they know it could have been the sunrise! I'm with Vicki and say give the crop a try to see what you think! I too don't know the difference between skiming and surfing! No seawater around here! :~) #6608838Aimee C. Eisaman October 16, 2008
Also be sure to check the spelling on your title....the first one says "Spay"! #6608852Ulysses A. Villamin October 16, 2008
Awesome!!! #6608971Sherry McClead October 16, 2008
Ok... Title is fixed... funny thing is I had just noticed it myself... when there is sand in the picture it is skimmming... surfing is in much deeper water... OK... ok :)Sherrybear :}

Well im late but this is such a cool shot. I love the stop motion of the water. what a nice job #6609441Sherry McClead October 16, 2008
Thanks Adam... croping is just so complicated sometimes!!! So nice of you to stop by.Sherrybear :} #6609571
Dale Hardin October 16, 2008
Sherry, I am way late on catching this fine image and I enjoyed the discussions very much.I know that I am the one who speaks often of the left to right syndrome because most of the time it is the correct view. But as with all rules, it waits to be broken and this is a perfect case.
The only way to resolve the issue is the way you did it. Try both ways, put them side by side and see which one is more comfortable to look at. For me it was the original crop. I also really like the way you have two diagonals anchoring the composition.
As far as the leaning, if he were straight it would not be believable. His body posture shows he is shifting his weight by using his arm for a counter balance to over come the centrifugal force of the turn so it is very natural looking.
You did a great job. Well done. #6610284
Sherry McClead October 16, 2008
Thank you so much Dale... would have been fun if you had been in on it this morning... I like it both ways but do kinda like the newest crop which is more on the thirds.Sherrybear :} #6610895
Joan E. Hoffman October 17, 2008
Totally am voting for the original shot... to me it looks most natural. Great capture Sherry! I have not yet attempted an action shot... still working on buildings ROFL! #6615029Irene Colling October 17, 2008
All wonderful shots Sherry. I love the crisp detail in the water droplets. Most of all I like the body angle in relation to the spray of water. Just perfect. #6615825Sherry McClead October 17, 2008
Thank you so much Joan and Irene... action shots are not that hard... the hard part is being in the right place at the right time... I shoot in continuous some turn out good... most I throw away...Sherrybear :} #6616090
