In his paintings, Nelson Boren wants to portray a glimpse rather than the whole story. This allows the viewer to participate with the painting by completing the vignette any way he or she feels. As one completes the painting in the minds eye, each piece will hopefully arouse nostalgic memories of grandpa's time on the farm, the smell of the ranch while growing up, or even a self portrait. He especially enjoys capturing the weathered look of old leather and rusty spurs. He sees American history in these elements of cowboy life and is doing his part to preserve a piece of history.
Born in Tempe, Arizona, and graduating from Arizona State University with an architectural degree cum laude, Nelson currently hails from Sandpoint, Idaho. His work has been featured in a variety of publications including Southwest Art, Art of the West, Art Talk, Leading the West: 100 Contemporary Painters and Sculptures and New Westers: The West in Contemporary American Culture. He has exhibited throughout the U.S. and has work in the permanent collections of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Minnesota Vikings, the Coca-Cola Company, and the Museum of Nebraska Art.
