Hens & Chicks [Photography Contest Flower Photos]

Great grandma called them Hens & Chicks, I have never known them by any other name. 25 years ago I took a few from her garden & planted them in mine. These are their offspring. When I look at them I remember her.

This is lovely, Joseph, love the details you captured here and if I am not mistaken you might have a winner here.

Patricia, I can take no credit for the survival of this ground cover [proper name unknown]. See how Laurie discribed it above, "little resilient garden beauties"? I do absolutely nothing to tend them. Ice & snow, freeze and thaw have no adverse effect at all. Lots of folks do what my great grandma did, put them in rock gardens.Joseph N. DiGilio November 23, 2007
Thank you, Linda. I think everyone has memories like this. They are just private. I chose to share this one with all of you. #5114615Stefania Barbier November 23, 2007

Well, I love this one too, Joe. I remember Hens and Chickens from MY grandmother's garden, where she could always be seen bending at the waist, pulling out the weeds. It was a magnificent garden. I don't have an of her offspring, but when I saw your incredible macro, I immediately thought of her!Joseph N. DiGilio November 24, 2007
Thankx, Michelle. Next spring look for them in the nursery, take them home & plant some memories for your grandchildren.Rhonda Burger November 24, 2007
Beautiful shot Joe. Love this macro. Wonderful color and comp. Nice work. My mom and gramdma had them too. I use to plant a few everywhere I lived. Nice memories...Rhonda #5119082Joseph N. DiGilio November 24, 2007

It seems these plants have brought out sweet nostalgia in a lot of people, Joseph ~ whether for hens and chicks (beautifully detailed macro, by the way), or for other garden inhabitants that return yearly as a reminder of someone you love.Joseph N. DiGilio November 28, 2007
I had forgotten that many of us are reminded of loved ones by plants and flowers we associate with them for one reason or another. Thanks for reminding me, Mary.Patricia Ronan December 19, 2007
