A goldfinch in winter in its less striking but still beautiful colors. This was taken last winter. Some of them are still fairly golden this fall.

Thank you, thank you all for your lovely comments. Sorry to be so late in saying thanks, but I've been away for a few days and will be off again in a couple more. I actually was pretty close to this bird. I got very bored with not much to shoot last winter. I have a tall window in my workroom with a feeder on it attached by suction cups. I didn't want to photograph birds at the feeder though, and so I put a pipe in the ground below and set up a dead branch in the pipe hoping birds would use it to sit waiting their turns so I could shoot them from inside without getting the feeder in the picture. And this guy did. The only problem with the setup is that the birds get "stuff" all over the window, so it involves much leaning out into the frigid air to clean it off. :) #4961921Phil Stith October 22, 2007
The results of your labor made it all worthwhile. Simply beautiful!!! #4962448Crystal L. Craig October 22, 2007

I'm a little slow on the uptake, Mitch. This is such a beautiful capture! My mother was an enthusiastic birder- and I only wish she was here today to see this! I was going to ask you how you got so close. What a great idea you had to get the birds NOT at the bird feeder!Steve says you're on a shoot in Mexico. Can't wait to see what images you bring back, and missed you at this month's Halloween SSS!!! (We slew the boys, by the way!! :) #5036628

Lynn, Pat, Ellen, and Roxanne--thank you. Yep, just back from Mexico (where some of the images would have been great for the spooky stuff). Had a truly marvelous time but missed you all and the shootout. Glad, but not surprised, to hear the stronger sex prevailed in it. :) Gonna go look at it all pretty quick! #5068963Patricia A.
