Secret Storm [Contest Finalists August 2003]
Uploaded: August 25, 2003 08:18:02
Believe it or not, this was taken from the van window while driving 60MPR Down the freeway in Portland Oregon. Camera on auto sport mode to stop action, I held the shutter button down to take multiple shots. Most of them came out blury. Framed and detailed in Photo Impact.
Roseann E. Dreasher August 25, 2003
Whoa! Sometimes the details about how the shot was taken are more interesting than the photo itself, in this case both are fabulous!! #54782Lori Ditlefsen August 25, 2003
Thank you Roseann. I was just happy that one came out good enough to use after a little manipulation. I went through my camera battery really quick that night taking multiple shots in an attempt to capture a different look or unusual shot. 98% of the shots I came home with are not garbage. LOL :) #177928Lori Ditlefsen August 25, 2003
OOPs, make that, "ARE" garbage! I was going to say: "are not useable" then switched gears in mid sentence. LOL (blush, snicker) #177929Rui Filipe Rebelo Prego August 25, 2003
Super Shot ! One second in your live (may-be less), you will never forget this second.Lori Ditlefsen August 25, 2003
Thank you Rui! #177945Brinn MacDougall August 25, 2003
I love this Lori!! Amazing timing! You captured one great boomer.. #177974Lori Ditlefsen August 25, 2003
Thank you Brinn. Looks real doesn't it! Here is the original photo which was in fact taken from the van window doing 60 MPH on the freeway. I just thought it looked a little plain, so I ... #177989Lori Ditlefsen August 25, 2003
I wanted to see how the enhanced version was excepted before I showed the original. Sorry guys, I wanted to see if folks bought the scene. I've been working on improving my editing skills and gettin better all the time. For contests I won't let a fake fly on it's own without sharing the work done. The special effects where all done in Photo Impact, using Illumination, then creative lighting, and Creative Particle Effect, then rain. :) #178009Suzie Strasburg August 25, 2003
Outstanding job!!!!!!!!!!!:~))) #178164Judith G. Secco August 25, 2003
Wow, your manipulation is outstanding. great job, Lori.Lori Ditlefsen August 25, 2003
Thanks Suzie and Judith. Since manipulation is what I do for a living, I am sharpening my skills all the time. This shot just struck me as being a cool storm type, "We aren't in Kansas anymore Toto!" :) Glad you like it. I'm waiting for the critism patrol to share their view! LOL #178238Paula Showen August 25, 2003
Wow, Lori…incredible! This is absolutely fantastic work! Both the original photo and your special effects! You’re both a sharp-shooter and an artist! Nice work! Good luck with it! #178299Lori Ditlefsen August 25, 2003
Thanks Paula. It was fun to play with. I took about 60 shots while driving before the sun went down. Most didn't turn out but the few that did are nice ones. :) #178337Paula Showen August 25, 2003
I'm still amazed! Everytime I look at it. #178371Evy Johansen August 25, 2003
Wonderful images, Lori! Really a great job! #178378Lori Ditlefsen August 25, 2003
Thank you so much Evy! #178380Brinn MacDougall August 26, 2003
Lori..since you used me to "confess" lol I will be the one armed patrol. This is called Digital Art! no harm no fowl. I do it all the time..and I know lots of others do too. I would hate to let you loose with a really good editing program! Now, the dig. The only spot that gave you away, is the top of the lighting bolt..needs work. There, that wasn't so bad! So..my friend your image is upstanding and outstanding! #178722Lori Ditlefsen August 26, 2003
LOL, Brinn, you just crack me up! Yes the lightening bolt needs work, agreed. Now if I only knew what the tops SHOULD look like! LOL Should I maybe cover it with a cloud? or brighten the tips up or tone the tips down? A little assist pleeease! (grovel, beg, bended knee, hands folded .....)LOL #178747Brinn MacDougall August 26, 2003
Hi lori, I would use a bit more cloud cover..if you have "fade" option, that would work too!! Also, most bolts come from the ground up!! I guess..lol that's what they say.. #178813Lori Ditlefsen August 26, 2003
I didn't know that lightening comes from the ground up. Hmmmmm, I'll have to research that. I have fade but I think a few more dark clouds might work too. I'll check it out and get back with ya! #178828Lori Ditlefsen August 26, 2003
Are you laughing at us Johanna??? (snicker)OK Brinn, lightening goes from the ground to the cloud and back again which is why the stringers are pointed down most of the time. So what I have to do is bring the end of the bolt down and add a glow in the cloud around the tip. I went and looked at lightening and read about it. So now I now I know! Ya learn somthin new every day! :) #178847

WONDERFUL WORK, and what matters for me is the emotion we get from looking to an image! May it be the original shot or not, and your treated image is absolutely GORGEOUS, keep them coming,Lori Ditlefsen August 26, 2003

Thank you so much for all the support Jacqueline! We'll see what the judges have to say! LOL #188007Gunther Allen September 07, 2003
A wonderful piece IMO. I've never tried this, but could you use the blending tool at the upper ends of the bolts- so they seem to come out of the clouds more? Simply great manipulation- I'll have to give it a try! :-) -G #190746Lori Ditlefsen September 07, 2003
Thanks for the comment Gunther. Yes I could manipulate the ends of the bolts more and should add a light cloud over the tips or, like you said, use a blending tool. I just haven't gotten back to this one. Manipulation is really where I shine. I wasn't much of a photographer but I'm working hard to be better. Thanks again! :) #190761Aki Jinn September 08, 2003
cool photo ! I didn realized it was a manipulation !! Great shot u have , taken from a van window, its hard to take somthin that looks as clear as thisgood job :>
